AIRSPACE ALERT: Shahed Drone Now Carries R-60 Missile

Published at : 14 Dec 2025

The Geran-2/Shahed has transformed from a simple one-way strike drone into a low-cost, heat-seeking micro–air-defense platform capable of stalking helicopters and disrupting Ukrainian interceptor tactics. Russia’s 2025 upgrade—integrating MITL control, cellular datalinks, strengthened nose sections, and a functional R-60 missile rail—has turned the drone into a “fighter Shahed” that escorts deep-strike waves, forces pilots to change altitude, and reshapes airspace behavior. Despite technical limits, the system is cost-effective, expendable, and psychologically powerful: a $20k–$80k drone now compels Ukrainian Mi-8 and Mi-24 crews to avoid entire flight corridors. This hybrid concept marks a doctrinal shift with global implications, showing how cheap loitering munitions can erode the dominance of traditional helicopters and reshape modern air warfare.
