ALONE IN THE WILD - BUSHCRAFT - CATCH AND COOK

Published at : 13 Dec 2025

4 Days bushcraft trip with minimal supplies. Brought the DDR - NVA East German Zeltbahn Poncho as shelter this time. A bit small but amazing quality and very lightweight. Demands some special setups I figured out in various weather including rain. Perfect for an outing like this in my area. It really fits the nature around here where there is difficult to find flat ground for sleeping.

What I had with me was approximately 150g pasta, salt and a small bottle of rapeseed oil. The rest I got from nature. It worked out like a charm. The hardest hunger with dizziness, fatigue etc I had morning of day 3. But I caught 3 small perch I cooked together with some spruce twigs, drank the broth and ate all but the bones. It was a great energy boost, got rid of a terrible headache, and had no problem hiking the rest of the day to final camp. The mushroom meal last evening made a big difference for my hunger and I had no problem falling asleep.

Warmest weather I had the first day. Then rain. Then last evening the temperature dropped drastically below zero under a clear night sky. Had some problem the last night freezing in the Tropen bag but solved it with the hot water bottle trick and got a few more hours sleep before sunrise.

Gear: Fjällräven Singi 48 backpack, NVA Zeltbahn Poncho shelter, Husqvarna Camp Axe, Mora 711 knife, Bahco saw blade, Fällkniven sharpener CC4, Carinthia Tropen sleeping bag, Therm-a-rest NoeAir Large, Jack Wolfskin floor saver, Nalgene water bottle 1 L, Biltema Pot, Vintage Cold handle pan, Casström fire steel, matches, fishing hooks and some line, about 3 m commando rope.
