Join us on an unforgettable cab ride aboard the Montenegro Express, part of the renowned Bar–Belgrade railway, on the scenic segment from the Adriatic port of Bar up to the northern border town of Bijelo Polje. This approximately 180 km journey navigates a dramatic ascent from sea level to over 1,000 m, showcasing the breathtaking landscapes of Montenegro’s rugged heartland.
Departing from Bar, nestled on the Adriatic coast and adjacent to Lake Skadar, the train embraces the coastal breeze before entering the Sozina Base Tunnel, a 6.17 km engineering marvel through the coastal range. Emerging from the tunnel, the route enters the mountainous terrain, tracing the Morača River Canyon, with towering cliffs and dense forests lining our path.
The whole Belgrade - Bar railway is punctuated by a staggering 254 tunnels and 243 bridges, there are 102 tunnels and 96 bridges in Montenegro, including the jaw-dropping Mala Rijeka Viaduct, a 498 m-long span soaring 198 m above the valley floor. As the train climbs toward Kolašin, it traverses dramatic hairpin curves and steep gradients (up to 25 ‰), offering an immersive cabin view of Montenegro's raw alpine beauty.
The line continues through Podgorica, then northward through high karst terrain before reaching Bijelo Polje, at around 578 m above sea level. Bijelo Polje, a significant rail hub, forms the northern gateway to the country and provides rich cultural glimpses along the route.
This cab ride captures Montenegro’s dramatic transition—from blue Adriatic waves to soaring viaducts and verdant canyons—showcasing one of Europe’s great railway engineering triumphs and a true feast for fans of scenic rail travel.
