Take the driver’s seat for a spectacular cross-border journey from Villach Hauptbahnhof in Austria to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia. This route combines Alpine engineering, breathtaking mountain landscapes, and smooth urban arrival.
The trip begins at Villach, one of Austria’s busiest railway hubs, where international EuroCity, Railjet, InterCity, and NightJet trains converge. From here, the train heads south on the Karawankenbahn, climbing gently through Carinthia before entering the Karavanke (Karawanken) Tunnel, a 7.9 km engineering masterpiece opened in 1906 that pierces the mountain range separating Austria and Slovenia.
On the other side lies Jesenice, a historic railway town and gateway to Slovenia’s network. From Jesenice, the train continues along the electrified main line via Kranj, passing through the scenic Upper Carniola region with views of the Julian Alps and fertile valleys. The route then enters the Ljubljana Basin, where the landscape flattens and the train approaches Slovenia’s vibrant capital.
The line is an important part of European rail corridors, linking Central Europe with the Balkans and the Adriatic.
