German Panzer Crews Never Knew T26E4 Super Pershings Had 11-Inch Frontal Armor.
April twenty-first, nineteen forty-five. Dessau, Germany. Through the shattered window of a brick apartment building, Unteroffizier Ernst Keller peers down Friedrichstrasse through his field glasses. His Panzer IV Ausf. H idles in the shadow of a collapsed warehouse, engine ticking in the morning cold. Keller has survived three years on the Eastern Front. He knows the sound of every Allied tank by its exhaust note alone. Shermans rumble with a high-pitched clatter. Cromwells whine like industrial saws. But the machine rolling into the intersection below sounds different, deeper, heavier, more deliberate.
The tank that emerges is unlike anything in Keller's mental catalog. It resembles a Pershing, the new American heavy tank his company commander warned them about in the morning briefing, but something is wrong. The turret looks deformed, bulging outward like a tumor. Metal plates jut from the front at odd angles. Springs, enormous coiled springs, protrude from the turret roof beneath metal shrouding. Keller lowers his binoculars and turns to his gunner. "What in God's name is that thing?" The gunner, Karl Hoffmann, squints through the gunner's optic. "American. Pershing variant, maybe. But look at the front. That's not standard armor. Those are add-ons. Field modifications." Keller calculates range. Two hundred meters. Close enough for a clean shot at the hull. The Panzer IV's seven-point-five-centimeter KwK 40 L forty-eight can penetrate ninety millimeters of armor at five hundred meters. At two hundred, it should punch through anything the Americans field. Should.
