Haunted Clifftop Castle - take a walk with us through the reputedly haunted ruins of New Slains Castle. With links to Dracula and also the ghostly spirit that haunts it, Slains Castle, also known as New Slains Castle is a ruined castle in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It was built by the Earl of Erroll, a hereditary title within the Hay family. The Hays had been a powerful dynasty in the area since the 14th century.
Once the seat of the Hays family, the castle fell into disrepair due to debts, and its roof was removed, leaving behind a haunting and atmospheric ruin. The castle’s history is shrouded in mystery, and it’s no wonder that it has captured the imaginations of those who visit.
The core of the castle is a 16th-century tower house, built by the 9th Earl of Erroll. A courtyard and square tower was built on the present site, probably around 1600. The original building was added to in 1664, when the wings around the courtyard were extended by the addition of a gallery or corridor. In 1707 the entrance front was renewed. It was rebuilt in 1837 in the Scots Baronial mansion style.
It is reputed to be haunted and also has links to Bram Stokers Dracula. It likely that the castle provided a visual palette for Bram Stoker when he started writing the book in Cruden Bay. A distinctive room in Slains Castle, the octagonal hall, may be the source for the octagonal room in Dracula. The castle is claimed is to be haunted by the spirit of Victor Hay, 21st Earl of Erroll, godson of Queen Victoria.
