There are few engines in the gearhead realm that excite interest and historical debate like the vaunted Allison V-1710 V-12 of WWII fame. This engine was fantastic in so many ways but lacking in others, which is what makes it an interesting topic. But what if I told you a version, the most powerful version of it ever made, never took to the air.

This 3,000hp beast would have run circles around the Merlins, made the German DB engines look like weaklings, and could have changed the whole story of the Allison's war...innovative but fatally flawed.

The story of the V-1710-E27 is complicated but fascinating. An engineering exercise that unlocked more power and efficiency out of a piston engine than had ever been found in history, it was frankly too powerful for its own good. A sky monster that never left the dyno.
