The 2025 Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 and 2025 BMW X3 M50 are two of the fiercest mid-size performance SUVs on the market, blending luxury, speed, and practicality into one high-riding package.
The GLC 43 boasts a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder with 310kW and 500Nm, using a 48V mild hybrid system to add efficiency and response. With 620L of boot space (1680L seats down) and a price tag of $136,400, it’s a seriously capable, practical and stylish contender.
On the other side, the BMW X3 M50 packs a bigger, stronger 3.0-litre turbo inline-six, delivering 293kW and 580Nm, also with 48V mild hybrid tech. It may have slightly less power, but it punches back with a claimed 8.2L/100km fuel economy – though we recorded 11.1L/100km on test. Either way, it’s more efficient than the Benz’s buzz box.
Storage is close, with 570L of cargo space (1700L with seats down), and it undercuts the Merc on price, at $128,900. The BMW also edges ahead in outright performance, hitting 0-100km/h in just 4.6 seconds, compared to the AMG’s 4.8 seconds, both limited to a 250km/h top speed.
But numbers only tell part of the story. The GLC 43 delivers a sharper, more aggressive drive with its AMG-tuned suspension and quick-shifting gearbox, while the X3 M50 leans on BMW’s M DNA for a more balanced and engaging ride. Both offer premium cabins, cutting-edge tech, and enough everyday usability to justify their price tags… but which one truly earns its badge?
